WORK EXPERIENCE -2023

7th July 2023

For the Year 10 students, the term’s highlight was last week when they were away from school to spend time at various firms in Mombasa on their work experience encounter after completing their end of year examinations. This is an activity organised by the school every year for students as part of its career development program with the aim of exposing students to various work environments.

The students got the opportunity to do a week of work experience to help them find out what the world of work is like and what employers want. Most of them tried to choose placements that relate to their future careers or in areas that gave them the opportunity to observe and learn more about various careers and the field of work. Throughout term 3, they had been offered guidance during PSHCE lessons, on the code of conduct expected while at work and health and safety issues.

The work experience exposure helped the students examine the opportunities available and develop the skills needed to make a successful transition into working life. From the feedback we received from them, the experience was a great way for students to see if their future dream career is right for them. They found out what work is really like and what employers want. They also had a chance to try out and develop important key skills and were treated like adults as they took on different responsibilities; for example applying for placements, getting to work on time, following the stipulated dress code, and finally writing letters of appreciation to the firms that gave them placement opportunities.

It is essential to have some relevant work experience before applying for certain jobs and courses, such as Medicine, Law, Teaching, Hospitality, and Journalism. The experience is also valuable when writing CVs or making university and job applications.

I am confident that this was a successful learning experience for the students.

Congratulations to all the Y10s who attended the work experience sessions at various organisations in Mombasa.

A special thanks goes to all the institutions and hotels that offered our students placement allowing them to get some insight into various careers as they observed professionals at work. A big thanks also to all our parents for their support and commitment to ensuring that learners arrived at their work experience placement.
