This week, representatives of 24 UK universities were in Mombasa at the Serena Hotel for a University Education fair organised to market their institutions.
The school arranged for the representatives of some of the universities and colleges to come to school to talk to our A- level and BTEC students about the courses, qualifications and requirements needed to join their institutions.
The visiting university reps provided a unique opportunity not only for students to meet and consult with recruitment professionals but gave an eye-opening exposure presentation on fees, living standards, course requirements and qualification needed. They gave a lot of insight on options, expectations, and opportunities that many students were not aware existed in their individual universities.
During the talk, crucial guidance was given about suitable courses based on personal preferences and goals. After the talk, students were able to speak directly to representatives from specific universities asking questions and gained a lot of insight about what each university had to offer. They also gave valuable careers choice tips which interestingly included having to start by finding out what you are like and what you could do. The main stress was on discovering your strengths, personality, what you are passionate about, and some jobs and degree subjects that may be perfect for you!
The Y11 and especially A- level & BTEC students who attended the session are now enlightened about opportunities available in the UK. The talk actually kick-started the need to begin preparing and planning far ahead for the time when they will have to write personal statements for inclusion during the filling of UCAS application forms.
UCAS Clearing, Adjustment, conditional offers, applying to university can feel like learning a new language. But we learnt that if you give yourself plenty of time and do your research well, it is actually not that hard. One can apply to up to five universities, and it is wise to try and visit or research as many as you can on your shortlist.
The road ahead will require a lot of hard work in the months to come as the grades they get will ultimately determine our destination.
