The excitement was palpable. The boys were unable to hold it in on the journey to the train, on the train, through supper and into their rooms! We were in Nairobi for a football tournament and the boys were very much looking forward to it.
They started very well against one of the strongest teams in Brookhouse; we gave them a very good game and came very close to surprising them. The boys worked extremely hard and Luca and Aiden Mfalme showed great courage defending against some very direct play. Matis worked hard to move the ball up and Sean and Aiden Mburu came close to scoring. In the second game we came up against another strong side, Hillcrest. In a very fast opening few minutes we conceded a goal, but then settled in and grew into the game, Jayden making several smart saves and Matis again controlling the midfield. As this game progressed we grew stronger and stronger until finally Aiden Mburu scored after some good work from Matis and Ali. The boys were ecstatic! We continued to push forwards and Matis then scored the winner with literally the last kick of the game. This energy and ‘never say die’ attitude was evident in each of our following games, with the boys battling and playing some good football against BGR (who were eventually finalists and found us very challenging opponents) and Pembroke. We finished the group with two wins, on equal points with Brookhouse and Hillcrest. This saw us enter the plate competition. Here we played against other strong teams, including Peponi (eventual winners) and St Andrews. We gave an excellent account for ourselves and managed fourth place overall.
We had goals scored by Ali, Matis 2 and Aiden Mburu 2. Matis and Jayden also managed two MVPs during the games. Our players all deserve a great deal of credit for the energy and comradeship they showed during the games. I am very proud to have taken them to Nairobi and for them to receive the plaudits of the staff from other schools and parents that were there spectating.
