24th February 2023
World book day has become an essential calendar fixture in schools world wide and Week 7 saw the return of World Book Day, celebrated on Friday 24th February at Braeburn Mombasa. The emphasis this year is on making it YOUR World Book Day. English lessons on that at the High school day were based on books where possible. Meanwhile, throughout the week, a variety of World Book Day activities were incorporated into the lessons.
Students were encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character on Friday 24th February and were also required to bring a copy of the book and talk about or show the passage that describes the character they were dressed up as. They could also take part in the whole school parade at 8.15 am.
World Book Day is a day used to celebrate books and reading and as we discuss why books are special, the aim is to ensure the gains of celebrating books and reading on World Book Day continue to ripple long beyond the day itself.
English Language lessons on World Book day started with a reading session where books, magazines, or extracts from various subjects could be enjoyed. This was followed by book-based activities including the writing of reviews, summaries, and discussion of a wide range of fiction, plays, poetry, and nonfiction texts. The students also spent time in the school library and recommended books to their peers giving reasons for their choices.
Reading on World Book day and beyond, is intended to involve as many subject areas as possible providing the opportunity for all to discover, and relate to new authors, scientists, historians, explorers, and mathematicians from their websites, biographies, videos, and from research.
In general, everyone is encouraged t o read various materials around various subjects in any lesson, and opportunities are increasingly available to access material for reading, research, and exploration during reading time.
