9th September 2023
On Thursday 7th September, secondary students visited the largest floating library. That date was chosen because a career fair was held on board the ship, giving our students the opportunity to listen to careers’ advice before browsing the bookfair.
Before the career talk started we watched a short video explaining the safety measures to follow and what to do in case of emergency.
The career fair facilitator identified 4 main areas to keep in mind and to aspire to develop as we grow: life skills, growth mindset, resilience, leadership.
The first presentation was about 21st century careers. The guest speaker covered a wide range of career opportunities in various fields such as medicine, education, engineering, the media etc and highlighted the importance of choosing a career in an area one is passionate about. Students were encouraged to select subjects that they enjoy studying and that they are good at. The speaker also insisted on the notion of hard work and impressed on the students that studying is essential to reach their career goals.
The second speaker focused on the topic of growth mindset. Our students are very familiar with this concept since it is embedded in our learning approach. They can see growth mindset posters in the classrooms and hear teachers reminding them that we should open our mind to learning from mistakes, to trying and perfecting, to challenging ourselves and to being life-long learners who nurture a mind that constantly grows. A positive attitude, a love of learning and a language made of words to encourage and improve are key.
We then made our way to the bookfair. The amount of books was impressive and covered a large range of themes and topics: cookbooks, school books, classic English novels, crossword puzzles, note books, quiz books as well as stationery and souvenirs (cups, coasters etc). Students browsed, helped each other find interesting books, made recommendations, considered their family and friends when making their decisions and also practised their mental mathematics when converting the units (100 units = 320/-) to Kenyan Shilling.
During our student council meeting on Friday, students made positive comments about the trip. They enjoyed the career talk and the entire experience of the floating library. They all looked very smart and were superb ambassadors for the school.
