Young scientists in Year 10 recently engaged in an insightful and hands-on experiment. The experiment aimed to demonstrate the heat conductivity properties of water and glass, and we are pleased to provide you with a comprehensive report on the process and results.

Experiment Overview:

Objective: To show that water and glass are poor conductors of heat.

Materials:

Boiling tube

Source of heat

Water

Procedure:

A boiling tube filled with water was chosen for the experiment.

The source of heat was applied near the top of the water in the boiling tube.

As the experiment unfolded, our young scientists keenly observed the following phenomena:

  • Water Boiling at the Top: The water at the top of the boiling tube began to boil vigorously, indicating that heat was effectively conducted in that region.
  • Cool Bottom of the Tube: Surprisingly, the bottom of the tube remained cool enough to hold comfortably. This observation contradicted the expectation that the entire tube would heat uniformly.

Conclusion:

Based on the observations, we can confidently draw the following conclusion:

The experiment clearly demonstrates that water, and by extension glass, are poor conductors of heat. While the top of the water rapidly absorbs heat and boils, the bottom of the tube remains relatively cool. This outcome supports the idea that water and glass conduct heat at a slow rate, highlighting their insulating properties.
