Year 9 and 10 students had an opportunity to visit Haller Park, which is a nature park in Bamburi, this week. The park is the transformation of a quarry wasteland into an ecological area and holds a variety of plant and animal species which serve as a recreation spot for tourists and locals. The students enjoyed watching and stroking giant turtles, saying hi to the hippo, snakes, and feeding giraffes and a visit to the butterfly pavilion. The two hippos look very very well fed because they have a huge area to graze in and a big pond too.

Year 10 students were able to dissect an eye from a sheep. They examined the front of the eye and located the eye-lid, cornea, sclera and fatty tissue. They also examined the back of the eye and found muscle bundles, fatty tissue and the optic nerve. They extracted the lens, placed it on a paper with typed words and the words were magnified as seen in our photos.

Year 7 students were engaged in neutralisation reactions where an acid and alkali cancel each other to produce salt and water, while Year 9 and 8 students carried out an activity to sort out different leaves by use of a dichotomous key and drawing magnetic field lines from magnet bars and compass, respectively.

Have a look at our gallery of photos to see the students at work in science.
