Secondary Mathematics

11th February 2023

It has been a busy term so far. The Year 11 class spent the first couple of weeks working towards, and then doing, their Mock Examinations. Since then, we have been doing selected topical revision and corrections. The value of correcting in Mathematics (and I expect all other subjects) cannot be underestimated and plays a large part in improving their grades. As always, we wish the class luck with their revision but know their final results will depend on how thoroughly they are prepared.

Year 9 will also be preparing for external examinations for the core subjects of Mathematics, Science and English with their pre-mock examinations this week. This will be their first experience of such examinations and although the Checkpoint Examinations are not pass or fail exams, they give a very good indicator of the level of knowledge each student has relevant to other international students worldwide.

The rest of Key Stage 3 and Year 10 continue with their respective curriculums. Year 7 have been looking at Linear Graphs (straight line graphs) and have been finding gradients from lines and are also starting to find the equations for lines. They are now looking at the Mensuration topics of area and volume within which we will look at how the formulae for trapeziums and parallelograms are derived. Year 8, who have also been looking at areas and volumes, have investigated the value Pi (to 2d.p.) and have started to find the circumference and area of circles.
