Secondary Humanities - Geography

24th January 2022

This is an exciting and demanding term for our Year 11 students who have been undertaking their mock examinations and completing the last few topics of their Geography syllabus.

This term will require a focused approach towards content revision and mastering map reading, especially in Paper 3 which is the most challenging in terms of critical thinking skills.

We shall also be revisiting geographical skills such as map reading, questionnaire and data collection, sampling techniques and data presentation methods. They have also been using modelling clay and paint to try and create a volcano linked to their Plate Tectonics topic.

In studying the topic of rivers and lakes it has helped to incorporate ideas of social responsibility towards our environment in terms of clean rivers as a source of drinking water. Did you know that Lake Chala near Tsavo West National Park is the second largest carter lake in the world? It is right at our doorstep yet largely undiscovered in terms of tourism despite its amazing natural beauty. It is a freshwater lake unlike Lake Jipe which is also in the area and its source is Mount Kilimanjaro. This links in very well to Year 9 Geography as well who will be looking at Development and Tourism as a main topic. Kenya has many exciting sustainable tourism projects which we shall discuss.
