Embracing all our Guiding Statements during Respect Day

15th September 2023

Secondary students started off Respect Day with a quiz that challenged their knowledge of flags, countries, events and famous people. Our famous quiz master, Mr Rod Daniels, Head of Humanities, had prepared rounds of questions that would require students of all age groups to recall what they had done in History over the years but also relied on the level of their general knowledge. Mr Daniels delivered a powerful introduction before starting the quiz, during which he defined the key words “Respect”, “Discrimination” and “Prejudice”. Students were able to give examples of prejudice and were reminded that the problem is not only what is said or done but also what is ignored, an example of prejudice by ignorance is the thousands of East African soldiers who never got a memorial monument after World War I.

As this year marks the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech, English activities were based on the speech. Students first watched a video to remind them of the historical context and then had several vocabulary based activities to complete, working collaboratively.

We then moved to the Physics lab to discover a great number of scientists and mathematicians who have made long-lasting contributions in their field and are often not well-known. Our new Science teachers Miss Ohaga and Mr Shibweche also mentioned contemporary figures who are making important discoveries, particularly in the field of environment and climate change.

In the afternoon, activities focused on Art, Music and team-building. Primary and secondary students worked well together in their houses and participated with enthusiasm.

There was a real buzz of activity, learning taking place and teamwork during all these tasks. Students worked well with different age groups and with schoolmates they might not interact with otherwise. They also embraced the whole school approach in the afternoon and were able to lead, help and learn from the younger students.

Miss Mkok, Miss Simon, Miss Mang’oli, Miss Kihuha, Miss Barasa and Miss Maron planned and delivered interesting and engaging activities (mentioned above). Thank you to all the teachers who helped in one way or another during the day.

Well done students for welcoming a different approach to learning and adapting to the various learning environments. House captains and vice-captains, this was your first event of the year, well done for demonstrating leadership qualities in most activities and including all the students in your house.
