Maths Progression in Primary

The progression of Maths understanding for students during their journey through Primary is quite remarkable! Here we can see the progression along the Addition continuum for students at each year level:

Year 1

Children will use materials and pictures to solve simple addition stories and number sentences.

Year 2

Children will partition numbers into tens and units when adding two 2-digit numbers.

Year 3

Children begin adding fractions with the same denominator through a variety of increasingly complex problems.

Year 4

Children will begin to add multi-digit numbers using the formal written method of column addition.

Year 5

Children will add numbers with more than 4-digits, using the formal written method of column addition, using renaming (carrying).

Year 6

Children add fractions and mixed numbers with different denominators using the concept of equivalent fractions.
