Life-long learners - practising asking questions in French

15th September 2023

Les 5 méthodes pour poser des questions en français:

  1. Using “Est-ce que” at the start of a statement:

Est-ce que tu aimes la glace?

  1. Raising your voice:

Tu détestes les animaux?

  1. Adding “non” or “n’est-ce pas” at the end of a statement:

Tu lis des livres, non?

  1. Reversing the order of the verb and the subject:

As-tu des frères et sœurs?

  1. Using a question word:

Comment ça va?

Students have practised asking questions using the different methods stated above. It was highlighted to them that there are many ways to ask a question from a statement. They should avoid trying to translate questions they think of in English word by word and instead practise thinking in French. It is crucial that students have a good understanding and knowledge of the way the language works (verbs, sentence structure, connectives, etc) and use it to create their own content on any topic they like. Reaching a level of grammatical independence in any language enables learners to be creative and communicate effectively.
