This term has been a fantastic one for our science students across Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 with each class diving into a wide array of fascinating topics!
In Year 10, students have focused on honing their basic scientific skills, which include observation, critical analysis, and laboratory techniques. They have also been introduced to the atom, exploring its structure and the arrangement of subatomic particles like protons, neutrons, and electrons. This foundational knowledge will be essential as they continue their journey through the subject.
Year 11 students have been hard at work in both Biology and Chemistry. In Biology, they have explored the concept of coordination in humans and plants. From understanding how the nervous system works to learning how plants respond to environmental stimuli, students have created eye-catching displays to demonstrate their findings. On the Chemistry side, Year 11 has tackled challenging concepts such as redox reactions, acids and bases, and using indicators in titration experiments. These topics not only deepen their understanding of chemical reactions but also prepare them for practical examinations.
Our Year 12 Chemistry students have revisited the fundamental principles of the atom, diving deeper into s, p, and d subshell electronic configurations and how this impacts chemical bonding and properties of elements. This detailed study forms the backbone for understanding more advanced chemistry concepts. Meanwhile, in Year 12 Biology, students have been studying biological molecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and amino acids, learning how these essential compounds form the basis of life.
Finally, in Year 13 Chemistry, students have delved into the complex world of organic chemistry and synthesis. This includes learning about hydrocarbons, alcohols, and more complex molecules, as well as how to create these substances through chemical reactions. This advanced knowledge is crucial for those aiming for careers in chemical research, medicine, and related fields.
It has been a productive and engaging term across all levels, and we look forward to seeing even more exciting developments as the year progresses!
