Welcome back to another academic year at BMIS. We hope you had a restful summer break and are ready for an engaging and productive Term 1. A warm welcome to our Year 7 students as they make the exciting transition to secondary school! We are delighted to see them settling well and adapting smoothly to the school routine. This term will be all about helping them feel at home in their new environment and understanding the importance of safety in and outside of school. This also aligns with their PSHCE topic for term 1a: ‘Transition and Safety.’
Year 8 students will explore the risks associated with drugs and alcohol, emphasising making informed choices and understanding the consequences of substance use. They will have open discussions to encourage responsible decision-making. In Year 9, students will tackle critical issues surrounding peer influence, substance use, and the dangers of involvement with gangs. We aim to empower them with the knowledge and skills to resist negative pressures and make positive choices.
To support our PSHCE curriculum and promote self-awareness and mental health, we have several assembly topics planned throughout the term. These include ‘the well-being wheel’, responsible usage of social media, social anxiety and World Mental Health Day. We also have topics dedicated to promoting responsible citizenship like beach clean up and special days that promote empathy by giving donations and dressing up to create breast cancer awareness. In week 14, at the end of the term, the Year 7 form will also have an assembly to tell us all about friendship now that they will have interacted with other students for 14 weeks.
In regard to student leadership roles, some classes have already chosen their Student Council Representatives, who will play an active role in representing their peers and contributing to school initiatives. We will be opening applications for Prefect positions next week.
Wishing you all a fantastic start to the new academic year. Stay safe, stay informed, and let's make Term 1 a memorable and successful one!
