Kenya and the Road to Independence - Year 7 History

26th June 2021

This term Miss Mkok and I have combined to teach Kenyan History in a number of English and History lessons.

We have discussed colonialism in the 19th Century and the ‘Scramble for Africa’.

Students have also learnt about the involvement of Kenyans in the First and Second World Wars. As part of this topic, we discussed different aspects of racial discrimination. For example, the exclusion of Africans from senior officer ranks and the recently disclosed controversy involving war graves in Africa and Europe. You may remember that the latter case led to a formal apology from the British Prime Minister and a promise to rectify past practices.

We have also discussed the Mau Mau uprisings and the emergence of Jomo Kenyatta as the leader of the Kenyan independence movement. Year 7 will resume their Kenyan studies after the End of Year Examinations.
