Interact Shoe Boxes Drive

8th December 2022

On Wednesday 7th December the Interact Club, Max, Ana, Jasmine, Kate and James, visited the Wema centre in Bamburi. They were accompanied by Miss Janet (Year 4 TA) and Year 5 and 6 students who showed interest in their work, namely Aleena, Ariana, Sienna, Sammy and Sean.

Before leaving BMIS we had a team meeting to prepare the visit. The students decided who was going to lead which game and then proceeded to ferry the shoe boxes to the school bus.

We were given a very warm welcome when we arrived and started with a tour of the centre with the programme manager Miss Eunice. We learnt more about the work Wema Centre does, who the children are and why they are at Wema, how they learn and grow and what practical courses they can follow to become independent young adults.

In the dining hall, we introduced ourselves and listened to the Wema choir sing a song about sharing love and not judging a book by its cover. It was an emotional moment. We then proceeded to organise the games we had planned; we divided ourselves in 4 teams and played Scrabble, Uno, an aiming skills game with bin bags and hoops and a game of duck, duck, goose. I was really impressed with all our students who were very comfortable explaining the games and helping the children. The students who led games outside on the playing field, supported by Miss Janet, showed creativity by introducing new games and they also interacted well with the children. It was really nice to see how willing to learn new games the older children who played Uno and Scrabble were and how all the children we met were confident, humble and easy to talk to; they are a credit to the staff at Wema Centre.

We eventually had to leave and even though our students would have gladly stayed longer, the time to share the gifts and depart came.

We thanked the children again and handed out the Christmas shoe boxes gifts to all the students who had gathered in the hall. They were very grateful and thanked us profusely as they opened their presents. There was a real buzz and excitement as we exited and left the children to discover the goodies hidden in the boxes.

The visit was a real treat for us as we felt “at home” and naturally interacted with the lovely Wema children. We hope to return soon and to be able to donate a few Scrabble boards and Uno games for the children.

On behalf of the Interact team, a huge thank you to all students and parents who donated a shoe box, you have made a difference this Festive Season and we are grateful for your support.

We hope to have another successful term as an Interact team next term and trust that you will continue to support our fundraising efforts to help us drive more projects.

Thank you and have a lovely Festive Season.

“It was a pleasure meeting you and the members of the Interact club. They related very well with the children and now we plan on buying UNO cards :)

Thank you for the Thank you card which I will print and hang in the office.

I would also like to pass our sincere gratitude to you and the children who purchased and so beautifully wrapped Christmas gifts for the Wema Children. It was very special and they were extremely excited for the rest of the day.”
