24th May 2024
Last week, we traveled up to Nairobi to compete in the prestigious IAPS Young Programmers Competition held at Peponi House School on the Friday 17th May 2024. This is a great event, giving our students the opportunity to test their computing knowledge and skill against the best from across the IAPS schools in Kenya. Not only does it test your computing knowledge and problem solving skills, it also tests a number of other valuable life skills. Your communication and presentation skills, as you have to showcase your work to the judges. Your time management skills as you work against the clock to complete your challenge. And finally, your ability to work well together as a team.
Our under 11 team, made up of Dev (Year 5), Vyan (Year 6) and Aaryan (Year 6), took part in three challenges. A coding challenge in Scratch, a design challenge in Kodu and a computational thinking challenge using a variety of ciphers to decrypt secret messages. Our under 13 team consisting of Peter (Year 8) and Aleena (Year 7) also faced three challenges. A design Challenge using Sketchup or Paint 3D, a coding challenge in Python, and a Webpage design challenge using HTML code. Our students worked very hard all day and maintained a positive attitude throughout. I am happy to say that we did not come home empty handed. Peter and Aleena came away with a bronze medal for their webpage design skills.
As always, Peponi were fantastic hosts and we are very grateful to them for organising such a wonderful event. We very much look forward to going back next year.
