Healthy Relationships - KS3 PSHCE

26th May 2023

The PSHCE programme at BMIS is based on the Department for Education requirements and follows a programme builder from PSHE association that encompasses all the topics and objectives outlined in the framework.

Students in Key Stage 3 have, this term, explored the broad topic of relationships with age and developmental stage appropriate objectives, expectations and resources. All students have looked at the characteristics of a healthy relationship, the signs of an unhealthy relationship and been reminded of what consent means and why it is crucial to be clear about its definition and the responsibility of the person seeking consent.

BMIS grows life-long learners, healthy and tolerant individuals through a number of activities and subjects such as PSHCE.

Year 7 learn about healthy relationships in PSHCE

The Year 7 class have been looking at building healthy relationships in PSHCE this term. The aim of the series of lessons was to help them build healthy relationships with friends and themselves. While doing this we also explored the warning signs that a relationship may not be healthy. We started by looking at the differences in the relationships we have with different groups such as friends, family and teachers, how these differ from acquaintances and appropriate boundaries for each group. We also looked at some of the differences between our relationships with our friends and our online friends before exploring ways to have a positive relationship with ourselves. The underlying theme for all the areas remained as building positive relationships so we can become healthy individuals and identifying relationships that may be damaging.

Healthy and tolerant individuals - Y8 PSHCE

Year 8 students have been studying the topic of Identity and Relationships in PSHCE this first half of the term.

Through carefully chosen resources they discussed the qualities of positive, healthy relationships, how to demonstrate positive behaviours in healthy relationships and forming new partnerships and developing relationships.

We also spent a lesson talking about consent in various contexts and highlighted the crucial fact that the legal and moral duty is with the seeker of consent.

In our last lesson students demonstrated a good understanding of peer pressure and consent when looking at the contemporary issue of sharing personal images.

Going back to our first lesson, we explored the changes that cities and countries can go through and discussed some recent news linked to the topic. We also talked about the factors that bring those changes in identity. Students discussed people’s identity too and were able to list keywords that make up our social identity.

Students were engaged in all our PSHCE lessons and benefited from numerous discussions. Well done for sharing and actively taking part in the lessons Year 8s.
