This past week, Year 7 students have been looking into the fascinating world of glaciers and learned about their powerful impact on shaping landscapes.
We explored how glaciers are formed and the science behind their slow, powerful movement. Using interactive resources, students discovered the difference between valley glaciers and continental glaciers, as well as the dramatic changes glaciers make to valleys and mountains over time. Toward the end of the lessons, we practised identifying key glacial landforms and discussed how each is created by the glacier’s unique processes of erosion and deposition.
We took our learning a step further with a hands-on activity linking geography, art, and creativity. Students worked in small groups to draw some of the landforms of hanging valleys, Pyramidal peaks, Arêtes, and corries, replicating the features they had learned about in class. Each group then presented their work, explaining how their model represented the impact of glaciers on the landscape. During the second half of that lesson, they worked collaboratively on a research activity, looking up real-world examples of glacial features from around the world.
This dynamic session allowed students to reinforce their understanding of glaciers in an interactive way. They were fully engaged and eager to share their newfound knowledge!
Well done to all of Year 7 for your creativity and teamwork!
