Creative and critical thinkers - Year 7 PSHCE Financial Decision Making

30th June 2023

Following the half-term break, Year 7 students engaged in a thought-provoking PSHCE lesson that delved into the fascinating relationship between money and emotions. The session aimed to encourage students to reflect on the impact of money on people's feelings and explore different perspectives on whether money can truly buy happiness.

The lesson began with an open discussion where students shared their personal experiences and thoughts on how money affects emotions. Some students expressed that having enough money for their needs and desires made them feel secure and content. Others highlighted that money-related stress or the lack of financial resources could lead to negative emotions such as anxiety or frustration.

We listened to David Walliams reading an extract from Billionaire Boy, which introduced the concept of happiness and challenged students to contemplate whether money could be a source of genuine happiness. Engaging in small group activities and thought-provoking exercises, students explored the idea that while money can provide comfort and opportunities, true happiness often lies in meaningful relationships, personal growth, and a sense of purpose.

The session concluded with a lively debate, where students expressed diverse opinions on whether money can buy happiness. Some argued that material possessions and financial security contribute to overall well-being, while others emphasised the importance of non-material factors like love, health, and experiences. This lesson stimulated critical thinking and encouraged students to develop a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between money and happiness.

By providing a platform for open discussion and thoughtful reflection, the Year 7 PSHCE lesson on the emotional aspects of money fostered a deeper understanding of the impact money can have on individuals' feelings. The lesson empowered our students to think critically, appreciate non-material sources of happiness, and make informed choices about their own relationships with money.
