Badminton Trophy Competition

This week, on Thursday 22nd September, a group of our students participated in the Badminton Trophy competition hosted by our sister school Braeburn Garden Estate. This is an annual Speech and Drama competition in which school teams work collaboratively to devise a performance in a set amount of time.

Our team consisted of five Under 11 students from Year 6 students and five U13s from Year 7 and 8

namely Sienna Flynn, Ariana Jamal, Malak Mohiey, Aleena Butt, Sammy Mwangovya, Denis Ndemwa, Renisa Malde, Ciara Flynn, Tatyana Omollo and Taseen Butt. We had a mixed group of enthusiastic students setting off from Mombasa to take part in a challenge they had never been engaged in before. It was something new but from the look on their faces they were ready to give it a go.

On the day of the competition, the theme ‘Imagination’ was selected randomly from a sealed envelope and all participating teams were allowed just over an hour to come up with an improvisation to perform for 4-7 minutes based on this theme. Our team, like all the others, had to work independently without adult help. They were only allowed to spend fifteen minutes with their teachers at the beginning and end of the one-hour preparation time. All this was without props or changes of costume as marks would be deducted if these were used. Finally, they had to perform on the stage in front of everyone and the judges.

It was nerve racking, but they did a great job and put on a great and imaginative performance. We are very proud of all the students for their courage and confidence. It was great to watch them on stage performing a skit put together, on their own and in record time. The imagination was brilliant, and they did us proud.

We also got to watch all the other schools perform their pieces and the entertainment was enjoyable.

We had a wonderful time on the trip, and I would like to thank all the students who took the bold step and participated in this exciting competition. Well done!
