Beyond the Classroom

At BMIS we maximise opportunities for learners beyond the classroom, by enhancing experiences. This helps learners to develop into well-rounded individuals with a wide range of skills that will be of use in their future.

Arts – music, drama, art

All Learners are encouraged to take part in Drama productions on stage.  BMIS has several productions each year, as well as regular musical concerts, talent shows and class assemblies.  LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is offered as an extra-curricular activity to all in Years 3-11 and is taught by a qualified instructor.  We have a number of peripatetic music teachers instructing in different musical instruments, including drums, piano, string, brass and voice, with our most talented students participating in the annual ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) Examinations.  BMIS learners are encouraged to participate in local competitions and have had successes in annual events such as art competitions, poetry and drama.

Sport

BMIS has a range of sporting successes.  As a member of IAPS (Independent Association for Preparatory Schools) and KAIIS  (Kenya Association for Independent International Schools), we are fortunate to be able to compete with over twenty other schools both in the coastal area and upcountry over the course of the year.  An average week will have between 6 and 10 sports fixtures taking place with frequent weekend tournaments for each of the major sports. Sport at BMIS ensures that learners of all abilities will be given opportunities to take part in physical activities if they show commitment.  In addition, inter-house competitions in athletics, football, rugby, hockey, swimming, x-country, netball, cricket and rounders take place for all age groups.

BMIS swimmers compete both Nationally and Internationally.  A rigorous training programme is offered to more serious swimmers, who can choose to attend early morning or after-school sessions. BMIS swimmers have participated in the Africa Junior Swimming Championships and compete in NASA and CASA swimming galas anually. BMIS also has a learners pool for very young swimmers as well as offering Mother and Baby sessions confidence buiding.
